Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates

Jonah Winter takes us on an introduction to the life of Roberto Clemente in this stunning picture book biography titled, Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It all begins with Clemente's poor beginnings in Puerto Rico, but because of his love of the game and determination, Clemente ended up guiding the Pittsburgh Pirates to two World Series wins, and racked up 3,000 hits! Clemente stands apart as one of the leaders of Latino ballplayers who faced criticism, but proved his worth in the Major Leagues.

Clemente was always trying to give back and while transporting relief supplies to earthquake victims, he died in a plane crash.

I love how the illustrations alternate between color and black and white and capture a time of classic baseball. This is a wonderful picture book to introduce young readers to a young role model for Latino players.
