The fans at Get in the Game--Read aren't the only ones who think that sports and books go together. While surfing the web yesterday, I stumbled upon Books n' Balls, a charity netball tournament and after party in the U.K. open to anyone in the book trade. What's netball you might ask? Netball is a limited contact team sport in which two teams of seven try to score points against one another by placing a ball through a high hoop. The game originated in the U.S. as a derivation of basketball for women.
Two beneficiaries of this year's Books n' Balls tournament are Booktrust and Cancer Research UK. Booktrust is an independent charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to engage with books. "The written word underpins all our activity and enables us to fulfill our vision of inspiring a lifelong love of books for all.
This year's tournament takes place on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The tournament is for mixed abilities, so if you want to take part, but are worried about your level of fitness – don't be! In addition to getting some exercise, it's also an opportunity to meet other industry professionals.
