August 2009 Book Brawl

Each month, we'll pit similar books against each other in the upper right hand sidebar. All month, it's up to you to vote for your favorite. (You'll find the poll in the top right sidebar) Let's keep it friendly, but in the comments section, please feel free to explain the reasons for your vote. What did you like about the book you chose as the winner? What didn't you like about the the other book(s)?

This month, we're taking a look at three books by the Barber brothers: Tiki and Ronde. Tiki and Ronde Barber have been teammates since their beginning as identical twins. They grew up as the ultimate teammates–not rivals. They set records while playing football at the University of Virginia, and both went on to have exceptional careers in the NFL. But the Barber brothers have also become stars off the field. Inspired by their mother’s love of reading and their own love of books, Ronde and Tiki have become leading literacy advocates and have served as co-captains of the National Education Association’s Read Across America campaign in 2005. They have partnered with Scholastic Book Club to pilot the “It Should Be Me” writing contest, designed to motivate young people to read and write. Together, Tiki and Ronde have written three children’s books, By My Brothers Side, Teammates, and Game Day, as well as two middle-grade novels: Kickoff! and Go Long!

So out of the three Barber children's books--which one is your favorite?

By My Brother's Side

Tiki and Ronde were each other's best friends. Together from the start, these twins might not have been the strongest or the tallest, but they were fast and worked hard at what they loved. And they loved sports, especially football.

Then one day Tiki badly hurt his knee in a biking accident, and he was sure he'd never be able to play again. Their mother had always told them, "You are each other's best friends. Stick together, believe in yourselves, and you can do anything." They kept her words in their hearts and never gave up.

Teammates (Paula Wiseman Books)

Tiki and Ronde are brothers, best friends, and teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings football team. It's the last preseason game against their arch-rival Knights — and the football is suddenly knocked out of Tiki's grip. What gives, he thinks, I've always carried the ball this way before.

Inspired by Coach Mike, who tells Tiki, "You've gotta believe," Tiki begins secret practice sessions with Ronde in the morning on the way to school. Will it make a difference in the next big game against the Knights?

Game Day (Paula Wiseman Books)

Ronde and Tiki are a team. They are twins, they are each other's best friends and biggest fans, and they play on the same football team, the Cave Spring Vikings. Rondeis #21 and Tiki is #22, always side by side.

Tiki has had seven long touch-down runs this season, and Ronde is proud of his brother, but he can't help feeling a little down when Tiki gets all the glory. If Ronde hadn't been leading the way with his blocks, Tiki wouldn't have been clear to score. Ronde thinks nobody notices the guy who blocks; they only notice the guy who scores. Will the day ever come when Ronde will get his chance?

Read an interview with Tiki Barber at the Library of Congress.
"One of the main reasons we wanted to get into writing children’s books was because of our kids. We know now that it’s not about us anymore. It’s about how we influence them and how we make them better, more full people. The basic principal that we want to incorporate when we write these kinds of books are the ideals that we learned - perseverance, hard work, determination, teamwork and respect for those around you." -Tiki Barber

The Barber books will suit boys who like Rich Wallace; I wish the covers were not quite as cartoony-- it makes them look younger.
