Mitali Perkins at Mitali's Fire Escape celebrated Jackie Robinson day by highlighting the story of this hero as told by his daughter Sharon Robinson in Promises To Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America. Listen to excerpts from an interview Ms. Robinson gave to Time For Kids.

Max Elliot Anderson at Books for Boys recently announced the winner of a very interesting contest who received a copy of Max's new book Lay-Ups and Long Shots. Max put out a call for the funniest sports stories--from any sport and his readers answered. You can read a few of the stories here.

Thanks to Jen Robinson for pointing out that Melissa at Kidliterate makes a plea for more sports books for girls, saying: "Where is the awesome middle-grade girls’ series about friends who play soccer/ice skate/play field hockey/shoot hoops? Where’s the stereotypical girls’ sports series, for that matter? Most days I’d give my left arm for a fair-to-middling book about short girls on a gymnastics team."

I have to agree!

Anastasia Suen at Picture Book of the Day highlights Baseball Hour.

In baseball hour, we practice skills,
warm up, play catch, and learn new drills.

Literate Lives highlights Baseball Great by Tim Green --the story of a 12 year old baseball phenom named Josh whose father has had success in the minor leagues, but never made it to the big leagues.
